Role: Product Development Scientist - Dog

Reports to: Develop Manager-Dog

Location: Franklin, TN

Summary:

This position provides project management and operational execution for new product development, existing product support, quality design and the synthesis of all aspects of product performance in delivering the consumer proposition. This position also keeps abreast of new technologies and global initiatives to assure the consideration and transfer of the most up to date processes, methodologies and techniques.

Key Responsibilities:

Develops innovative product design solutions to support the approved activity set

Develop products that translate consumer insight and wants into product attributes.

Ensure that scientific knowledge in combination with consumer insight is incorporated into new product designs.

Provide direction to ensure product quality throughout the pipeline process.

Leverage common platforms, where appropriate, across different petfood categories.

Create and maintain specifications for raw materials, finished products.

Conduct shelf life evaluation and recommendations to ensure product meets the quality parameters.

Understand and ensure all labelling criteria meets the legal requirements for nutritional and ingredient declaration for finished products.

Ensuring proper safety practices are followed in all testing and production situations.

Present technical understanding in both written and presentation formats of food science/engineering and the supporting sub-process for the manufacture of food systems.

Demonstrate a basic understanding of current business processes and their application to this position.

Ability to document, organize and summarize project results through verbal and written communications.

Leads the resolution of key technical business issues for the brand / segment.

Delivers ownable product designs through the use of IP management.

Ensures Design Quality for the segment.

Set the Product Quality Standards for all products within segment / brand, and collaborates with the Quality Services Manager in any product dispositions.

Selects training activities to ensure technical competency, creativity, teamwork and broad business knowledge leading to continued managerial and technical excellence for R&D.

Key Skills Required

Strong Working knowledge of food science, health and nutrition, food manufacturing processes, quality assurance principles, ingredient supply market and market research practices.

Project management skills with proven ability to develop and manage multiple projects.

Excellent interpersonal skills, with the ability to influence, motivate and lead a project team.

Knowledge of MARS business practices and procedures.

Creative technical development and/or problem solving skills

Utilizes consumer centered design tools to manage new product development activities

Self-motivated

Ability to learn new skills and ways of working.

Understanding of basic intellectual properties and patent processes.

Proficient in current computer programs and databases

Must be able to lift 50 lb. (22.7 kg)

Must be able to walk and stand for extended times during an 8 hr shift

Travel to other Marsís sites and vendors required 25 - 50%, may include international travel

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelors degree in Science or Engineering field and 3 years of experience in Research & Development, Manufacturing, or Quality Assurance or Ph.D. degree 0 years experience
Ability to travel 25-50% of the time
Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, Powerpoint

Preferred Qualifications:

3+ years of experience in Research & Development, Manufacturing, or Quality Assurance
Masters or Ph.D. degree in Science or Engineering field

5 years of increasing leadership responsibility in product / process innovation.
