Sr. Director Food Safety and Quality – Alsip, IL


Position Overview:

Provide direction and leadership to GLUS Food Safety and Quality Systems.  Oversees US quality programs and determines future plans to improve processes. Continually strivestoward standardization of practices and methodology. Is a member of the USLT and isresponsible for determining how to manage and continually improve Food Safety and Qualitysystems.  Is a member of the Global Food Safety Council and a key integration contact forGriffith Global Food Safety and Quality Systems.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Overall responsibility for food safety programs and compliance
  • Develops plans to standardize quality systems across all US plants
  • Determines ways to be more proactive than reactive to improve internal and external client satisfaction
  • Represents QS during major complaint negotiations
  • Is a technical resource for suppliers and customers
  • Works with departmental heads to achieve initiatives
  • Develops direct report personnel skills to improve efficiencies and departmental knowledge through monthly 1:1 sessions and conference calls
  • Compares performance of manufacturing sites in terms of raw material violations, complaints, errors, audits and provides direction for improvement in the form of a scorecard, monthly and quarterly recaps
  • Facilitates and or attends meetings that involve the development of business rules and setting policy
  • Attends USLT meetings basis predetermined schedule and provides quality systems updates
  • Updates operations management, QS, USLT and all other support departments on quality systems failures and improvements
  • Continues to improve quality systems to achieve stronger linkages between departments
  • Participates and ensures alignment with the Global Food Safety Council team
  • Acts as the technical lead person for Food Safety and Quality Systems department
  • Provides guidance and leadership to meet the British Retail Consortium (BRC) Food Safety and Quality framework.
  • Visits US plants on a regular (quarterly) basis or as required.
  • Develops annual objectives and communicates results on a regular (monthly & weekly) basis
  • Acts as the product recall coordinator and provides updates to the USLT
  • Assures compliance to all FDA and USDA requirements
  • Is the spokesperson for the department on food safety technological developments
  • Audits suppliers, co-processors on food safety and quality systems compliance on an as needed basis.  Reviews and provides direction for corrective action requirements.
  • Develops training materials used for food safety, GMP and allergen control
  • Approves new manufacturing equipment installations to assure sanitary design
  • This role provides leadership in all Food Safety areas across GLUS facilities including plant coordination/decision making, customer communication, and management updates.  
  • Supervises one GLUS Director who manages the Quality Systems and Analytical functions. Responsible for the overall evaluation of 15 personnel in the Quality Systems Department. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws.
  • Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and preventing and  resolving problems.


Position Requirements


  • Master’s degree (M.A.) or equivalent; with seven to ten years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • USDA, FDA, ISO 9000, Pathogen Control, Allergen Control, third party audit and GFSI (Global Food Safety Initiative) knowledge.
  •  Must be able to travel up to 25% of the time.
