ASSISTANT LABORATORY MANAGER
GRAND PRAIRIE, TX
JOB
SUMMARY
The
function of this position is to assist in the supervision of laboratory
operations with emphasis on microbiological and chemical techniques,
including processes, quality control, reporting, and interpretation of
results. The Assistant Laboratory Manager will have frequent contact with
the laboratory client base as well as Area Supervisors and Corporate
Quality Supervisor to assist the Laboratory Manager in the daily laboratory
functions.
ESSENTIAL
RESPONSIBILITIES
· Supervise laboratory operations
to maintain quality and efficiency
· Participate in laboratory
scheduling
· Ensure that
aseptic/microbiological and sound chemical techniques are applied to the
daily workload
· Ensure the technical accuracy
and quality, of laboratory results and final report generation
· Participate in laboratory
personnel training, reviews, and goal setting/personal growth, in
particular for microbiology departments
· Provide feedback with regard to
placement of laboratory personnel in appropriate laboratory areas to ensure
efficiency and staff success
· Report concerns of equipment
failures and non-compliance of supplies and reagents
· Participate directly in quality
control procedures and documentation to support compliance timeliness and
compliance with ISO 17025 guidelines
· Participate as an interface for
the laboratory client base, particularly related to communication of
results
· Participate in non-routine
projects as delegated by the Laboratory Manager
· Participate in the process of
final report summary for shelf-life evaluations and food borne illness
reports
· Independently pursue and have a
working knowledge of processes, procedures, or techniques in accordance
with the Food Safety Net Services Methods Manual, Quality Manual, Chemical
Hygiene Plan, Safety Manual, and approved laboratory procedures
· Maintain a high degree of
technical competence by reading scientific journals, attending professional
workshops, and being aware of food industry issues and trends.
· Perform other duties as assigned
· Provide guidance to Area
Supervisors to ensure that laboratory processes are managed with the
highest quality and efficiency
· Provide recommendations of staff
schedules in collaboration with the Area Supervisors to the Laboratory
Manager
· Request training and re-training
for laboratory staff
· Encourage increased working
knowledge of procedures by laboratory staff
· Periodically review and visually
audit laboratory staff to ensure compliance with methods
· Authority to write and deliver performance
reviews in collaboration with the Laboratory Manager
· Alert Laboratory Manager of need
for repair services for malfunctioning equipment as well as request new
equipment with the proper price quotations
· Isolate needs for any retests of
client samples based on quality control concerns or abnormal results
· Communicate directly with
clients on laboratory results
· Authority to approve final
analytical reports and stop delivery of results based on abnormal values
· Approve Pathogen Log entries and
participate in client communications in collaboration with the Laboratory
Manager
· Travel is required and at the discretion of
management

SUPERVISORY
RESPONSIBILITIES
Directly supervises
employees. Carries out all responsibilities in accordance with the
organization's policies, standard operating procedures and best practices.
Ensures compliance with all applicable laws and regulations at all times.
Responsibilities includes interviewing, hiring, training and mentoring
employees; evaluate performance of assigned personnel, monitor performance
action plans for employees, improve operational efficiencies by focusing on
customer service and maximizing production and profit; will direct work
flow; maintain harmony in the workplace and professional business demeanor
at all times.
MINIMUM
QUALIFICATIONS
· BS degree in Microbiology,
Chemistry, Food Technology, or related field
· Post Graduate degree or graduate
level courses in Microbiology, Chemistry, Food Technology, or related field
preferred
· Experience in a microbiological
and/or chemical testing environment
· Three years
experience in a commercial food-testing laboratory
· Or equivalent combination of
education and experience
