Regional Retail and Food Safety Specialist (36159) - Englewood Cliffs, NJ

Responsible for planning, directing, and implementing organizational safety programs to ensure a safe, healthy, and accident-free work environment for team members and customers by performing the following duties personally or through store safety team committees or task forces. The Regional Safety Specialist serves as the primary contact for accident investigation and works closely with the Regional Claims Administrator. S/he also works closely with Leadership, both regionally and nationally to design, develop and implement a program, which promotes a safety culture at all Whole Foods Market's stores in the Northeast Region.


  1. Lead and manage the store safety program for the entire Northeast region.
  2. Respond to requests for support and assistance for new store openings and existing store needs.
  3. Isolate and analyze loss data and apply a proactive approach to solutions.
  4. Work with a diverse group of Team Members and Team Leaders to develop and lead a safety culture with safe work practices.
  5. Plan, implement and monitor safety policies and procedures in compliance with local, state, and federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) rules and regulations.
  6. Develop and implement programs to train Team Leaders and Team Members in work site safety practices, fire prevention, and correct handling techniques for chemicals, equipment, and other materials.
  7. Analyze accident causes and hazards and seek solutions.
  8. Audit facilities to detect existing or potential accident and health hazards, determine corrective or preventative measures where indicated, and follow up to ensure measures have been implemented.
  9. Provide information, signs, posters, barriers, and other materials to warn of potential and actual safety hazards and to prevent access to hazardous conditions.
  10. Provide the information and training necessary to implement active Safety Committees at each location.
  11. Work with the Regional Claims Administrator to ensure right to work (RTW) programs are in place and being utilized.
  12. Maintain safety files and records including Injury and Illness Prevention Program (IIPP), Everclean, Health Department or Department of Agriculture audits.
  13. Be the regional contact for Everclean Auditor.
  14. Review and distribute audits with recommendations for corrective steps.
  15. Partner with the Regional Claims Administrator to coordinate Product Recall with regional leadership.
  16. Ensure ServSafe classes are completed by all required Team Leaders or Team Members

17. Ensure Safe Food Handling classes are presented and attended for new store openings on an ongoing basis in all locations.

18. Create, implement and continue to grow innovative proactive safety culture within the Northeast region.

19. Be the contact for safety supplies including personal protective equipment selection and purchasing within the Northeast region.

  1. Provide regional leadership with timely accurate reporting information including proactive plans of action for improvement.


  1. 3+ years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Food safety experience is a must.
  2. Must have OSHA and Servsafe Certification.
  3. Certified Safety Professional preferred.
  4. 3+ years of general, products, and auto liability, and workers’ compensation risk/safety experience within a corporate risk management department. Broker, TPA or equivalent experience will also qualify.
  5. Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations.
  6. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals.
  7. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of Team Leaders, customers, and the general public.
  8. Bi-lingual a strong plus.

9.    Able to work a variety of shifts, which may include weekends, evenings, and holidays.

10. Willingness to receive constructive feedback pertaining to job performance.

11. Willingness to provide exemplary customer service, both to Team Members and customers, constantly and consistently.

12. Strong communication skills, and contribute to the Team Member Services Team.

13. Ability to prioritize tasks, organize projects, and manage time effectively.
