The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS), Moffett Research Center of the National Center for Food Safety and Technology (NCFST), is seeking a full-time position to serve as a laboratory support scientist in food chemistry who will participate in a collaborative research program at the NCFST. This person will be appointed to a 2-year fellowship position. The research fellowship program is administered by Oak Ridge Associated Universities. The fellowship does not include benefits. The NCFST is a food safety research consortium of government, academic, and industry scientists. The food chemist will be part of a multidisciplinary team involved in detecting and quantifying a variety of chemical hazards/contaminants in foods.
Particular areas of desired skill include a strong background in analytical chemistry and familiarity with ELISA, LC-MS-MS, GC-MS, fluorescence and UV spectrophotometry, and FT-IR, NIR, and/or Raman spectroscopy. Strong academic credentials and experience in analytical chemistry and/or food chemistry is essential. Familiarity with methods for extracting and purifying food constituents and contaminants is highly desirable. In addition, the incumbent must assist in the interpretation and evaluation of the results of analysis to determine validity and scientific significance. Charts and graphs to illustrate the data will be expected to be generated. Excellent verbal and written communication skills are needed.
