PENANG, July 21 (Bernama) -- The cause of food poisoning that
affected 24 students of SK Tanjung Bungah here yesterday will be known in
two-days time, said the Penang Health Department Tuesday.
Its spokesman said the department had taken 11 food samples from the school
canteen yesterday and sent them to the Chemistry Department for tests.
When contacted by Bernama today, he said the food poisoning may not be due to
chlorine-tainted food but because of bacteria.
"However, we will only know the actual cause when we get the result
soon," he added.
Yesterday, 24 students showed symptoms of food poisioning after eating
allegedly chlorine-tainted nasi lemak and chicken rice at the school canteen
during their break.
They received out patient treatment at the Penang Hospital and were treated
for stomach-ache and diarrhoea.
Meanwhile, the school's senior assistant, Kamaruddin Shawal Hamid said the
students had recovered and resumed their classes as usual today.
