Our diverse staff of researchers, editors, and consumer advocates provide in-depth and timely information on issues that affect everyone in this country.

As part of Consumer Reports' efforts to impact the quality, safety, and accessibility of the food marketplace, the organization is embarking on a series of food safety testing projects over the next two years thanks to grant and donor funding. Work done with these contributions will focus primarily on meat and poultry products but could also include tests of other food like fish. Consumer Reports' goal is to use its testing, research, and risk analysis to help improve the marketplace by influencing consumer behavior, policy decisions, and rule making.

This position is grant funded and expected to last 2 years. During the duration of the grant, this position will be eligible for all benefits of employment within Consumer Reports.

Job Board Qualifications:

Master of Science Degree, PhD preferred, in Microbiology, Food Science, Chemistry, or related field with a minimum of three years of hands-on laboratory experience in microbiological food testing or nutrition. Development, evaluation, and application of different testing methodologies and a strong laboratory background are a must. Experience of product testing in the fields of microbiology, chemistry, chemical engineering, or food science is a plus.

Candidate must have solid project management and organization abilities and strong statistical skills especially in areas of test design and data interpretation. Knowledge of word processing and spreadsheets is essential. Must have very good interpersonal skills, be able to work in a team environment, and be service oriented. Strong oral and written communication skills are essential. Candidate must be resourceful and capable of making insightful and sound judgments. Strong technical aptitude, experience with test instrumentation, and computer proficiency is required. Candidate should be familiar with Microsoft Office Suite (Outlook, Word, Excel, Powerpoint) and Microsoft Project (Gantt Charts).

Job Board Responsibilities:

● Plans, conducts and supervises all phases of work relating to test projects assigned. Assignments usually require some originality with ingenuity.

● Estimates personnel needs, delegating to and supervising phases of the work to laboratory technicians and others assigned to the project; reviews literature and available records and prepares preliminary test protocols and project schedules; reviews recommendations and communicates with Market Analysts concerning brands and models to be tested; requisitions test samples, equipment or designs or modifies laboratory equipment for performing tests; evaluates all products, examines and evaluates results of tests and prepares scoring schemes; writes technical reports of assigned projects; checks reports written by others; discusses projects with writers, checks Editorial story and proofs for technical accuracy, and otherwise influences story line and content.

● May seek out, make contact and correspond with outside consultants, laboratories and/or outside technical personnel; may make investigations concerning equipment and facilities, and may be required to provide qualified technical information and opinions concerning field of specialization. May be called upon to prepare and/or review statements for presentation by Consumer Reports (CR) to government bodies or professional organizations. May attend and participate in scientific conferences as representative of CR and may be called upon to prepare reports for publication in technical literature.

● Works with a minimum of direct supervision and may be called upon to assume certain designated duties of the Director of Testing in the latter's absence.
