Job Description



Job Summary: This role provides both strategic and operational direction and leadership for quality & food safety throughout the entire Nutro business pipeline from vendor to consumer. This position is accountable for Quality and Food Safety in the global Nutro business and ensures that all products shipped to consumers are processed, packed and handled to specification. This position is critical for driving the change agenda on quality for Nutro. This position is a member of the Nutro R&D leadership team and is seen to be a potential successor for the VP R&D.

Principal Accountabilities

Leadership of the cross-functional quality transformation in the Nutro business through identification and implementation of state of the art quality (and supply) procedures, equipment and standards (factory network and related functions within our pipeline from vendor to consumer.

Ensures compliance to Mars global quality standards and quality systems Contribution to improvement of Mars global quality standards, systems and best practices (in a specific field of expertise).

Management of operational quality & food safety in the Nutro factory network (via the site quality teams).

Accountable for product hold & release process & decisions.

Incident Management and follow through, implementation of corrective actions Management of the vendor assurance function as our extended arm into the raw and pack material supply chain (forward quality management).

Management of a rigorous process around consumer complaints and implementation of corrective actions.

Ensures that 3rd party suppliers to the Nutro business work in line with expected quality standards.

Recruitment, training and development for the quality & food safety and vendor assurance function in Nutro.

Represents Nutro in the global quality community.

Leads the periodical quality reporting and drives continuous improvements and corrective actions.

Provides technical risk assessment to R&D VP.

Key Functional Skills/Knowledge

Proven track record in driving a significant transformation and changes in quality systems within a complex business environment.

Proven track record in effectively leading the quality function in a diverse and complex, quality driven business environment.

Demonstrated excellence at building relationships and leading and motivating others across business functions.

Demonstrated ability to deliver excellence in the execution of cross-functional business activities.

Demonstrated excellence in people management.

Excellence in Understanding of Quality systems, standards and procedures in FMCG businesses.

Comfortable to drive actions against the odds and resistance in an organization.

Demonstrated skill to make uncomfortable calls in a tough business situation.

Strong working knowledge of food science, health and nutrition, food manufacturing processes, quality assurance principles and ingredient supply market.

Intellectually curious to find and develop new opportunities in existing business situations.


Working experience in or technical know-how of petfood industry.

Working knowledge of the regulatory and statutory environment for food/pet food in the US.

Key Experiences

Minimum of 5 years of team leadership experience in a large quality role in FMCG environment (> 500 MUSD turnover).

Minimum of 7 years in developing, implementing and working with quality systems and standards in a complex business environment.

Minimum of 3 years of experience in a global business environment.

Desired Education

Food Science, engineering, chemistry or equivalent Master degree required.
