Summary:
|
|
Residing at The Hershey Company Technical Center,
this position involves a unique opportunity to work in the Global
Operations Technology Department. This department is responsible for
providing technical support to Hershey's manufacturing facilities in the
evaluation and application of new technologies, ingredients, and
formulations; identification, evaluation, and implementation of
Continuous Improvement projects; and, utilizing lean principles in the
evaluation and resolution of issues in confectionery products and
processes. The Research Scientist/Assistant Staff Scientist will:
- Under minimal
to moderate direction this
position will assume primary responsibility for executing
fundamental projects of major importance, complexity and scope with
emphasis on solution of theoretical problems, or for supervising and
coordinating the development efforts of projects having a major
impact on the Company’s current and/or future business
interests. In addition, the person in this position will:
- Undertake projects as
assigned, initiating own projects or recommending termination of
projects as is necessary
- Determine technical
approaches to be explored as they apply to assigned project or
self-initiated projects
- Establish objectives and
approaches to execute projects
- Secure appropriate
information as necessary
- Solve problems through
application of knowledge, experience, and original thinking, and
testing solutions
- Be responsible for
operation of complex equipment for experimentation as required
- Evaluate results and draw
conclusions from data
- Prepare project reports and
presentations
- Interact closely with
technical, professional and managerial staff of R&D as well as
Production, Marketing, and Legal departments regarding technical or
practical problem solutions
- Interact with other
industries and institutions as required to exchange information and
ideas in area of expertise
- Provide leadership and
instruction to technicians and professionals assigned to assist on a
project and provides coordination of efforts of other members of the
project as a team as is necessary. An employee’s performance
in this position is used to determine potential to move into more
responsible scientific positions.
- May require up to 50%
travel, some international. Some assignments may be multi-month
assignments.
NOTE: This position is a future
opportunity for 2012.

Responsibilities:
|
- Under minimum to moderate
supervision assume primary responsibility for undertaking and
executing research or development projects of major importance,
complexity or scope. Undertake research or development
projects as assigned, and make suggestions for initiation of
projects, or their abandonment, as experience allows. Assume
responsibility for participating in project design and methodology,
problem solving through application of knowledge and original
thinking. Test ideas through preparation of experimental
formulations, applications, or manufacturing trials. Under
general direction, take initiative to secure from all available
sources all pertinent advice, ideas, and information having a
bearing upon a project. Provide leadership and instruction to
technicians and lower level professional personnel assigned to a
project. May provide coordination of efforts of other members
of the project team as is necessary.
- Operate or direct the
operation of laboratory equipment or apparatus in the performance of
tests or experiments.
- Review results of tests
with others and suggest the advisability of further tests and/or
changes deemed necessary. Prepare all project reports as
required. Make presentation of significant conclusions when
pertinent.
- Works with R&D staff and
management, as well as Production, Marketing, and Legal departments
within the Company on a frequent basis in solving problems
associated with assigned projects.
- Provides leadership and
instruction to technicians and lower professional personnel assigned
to assist on a project. May provide coordination of efforts of
other members of the project team as it is necessary.

Qualifications:
|
|
This position can be filled at a
variety of levels based on the combination of education and
experience.
Education/ Experience minimum
requirements:
Senior Research Scientist (SG208):
- Bachelor's Degree in
chemistry, food science, or food engineering with a minimum
of 4 years applicable experience, or;
- Master's Degree in
chemistry, food science or food engineering with a minimum of 2
years of applicable work experience, or;
- Ph.D. in chemistry, food
science, or food engineering.
Assistant Staff Scientist (SG209):
- Bachelor's Degree in
chemistry, food science, or food engineering with a minimum
of 5 years applicable experience, or;
- Master's Degree in
chemistry, food science or food engineering with a minimum of 3
years of applicable work experience, or;
- Ph.D. in chemistry, food
science, or food engineering with a minimum of 1 year of applicable
work experience.

- Excellent written and
