Currently, Schwan's Research & Development, Inc. (Schwan’s), a subsidiary of The Schwan Food Company, is expanding our Corporate QA Operations department. If you’re a professional with interests in providing leadership for the company in the areas of food safety microbiology and incident management, reviewing food safety risks involved with the procurement, conversion, distribution and sale of all products manufactured (internally or through co-packing arrangements) and distributed domestically by the company and making recommendations to senior management on managing food safety risks, in addition to being the recall coordinator for the company and being responsible for executing annual recall simulations as well as coordinating efforts when a recall is necessary, take a look at career opportunities at Schwan’s.

REQUIREMENTS

  • Risk Assessment:
  • Reviews microbiology and food safety trending information and makes recommendations to senior management on appropriate improvements to food safety systems.
  • Reviews promulgated food safety regulatory guidance/directives in relation to microbiological implications to the company and provides direction for compliance guidelines for the manufacturing facilities.
  • Reviews new product platforms and/or sales avenues for food safety concerns. Develops and assists in implementing essential control mechanisms.
  • Food Safety and Microbiology:
  • Oversees all microbiology laboratory policy/procedures and published best practices. Interfaces with industry experts to review current industrial microbiological issues
  • Develops food microbiological & safety training for use in the Company. Assists with Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point (HACCP) and Advanced HACCP training for all company employees
  • Reviews and establishes corporate microbiological specification limits.
  • Reviews and establishes corporate microbiological sampling plan
  • Validation:
  • Provides leadership on ready-to-eat and not ready-to-eat food safety strategies.
  • Coordinates validation of processes with internal plants and key co-packers in relation to microbiological or food safety compliance/improvement.
  • Sanitation and Environmental Monitoring:
  • Reviews sanitation effectiveness (pre-op and operational) through monitoring programs. Reviews data for trending and suggests sanitation improvements as appropriate.
  • Provides technical assistance to all domestic manufacturing plants and co-packers as necessary or appropriate.
  • Recall Coordinator:
  • Review and update incident management corporate best practices. Coordinate recall simulations. Active member of Food Safety Advisory Team (FSAT). Stay current on industry recall expectations.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Masters degree. Ph.D. preferred.
Years of related experience: 5 - 7 years related experience.
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities: Advanced knowledge of food science and microbiological laboratory practices and methods. Solid knowledge and understanding of food regulations (FDA, FSIS). Ability to use common Microsoft software programs. Strong knowledge of mathematics and other physical sciences. Strong analytical skills; demonstrated ability to utilize statistical process control (SPC) applications. Solid interpersonal and presentation skills. Strong technical and business writing skills. Ability to solve complex problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Demonstrated supervisory experience. HACCP certification required or commitment to become certified once in the position.
