In this position you will be assigned to the full range of projects that involve complicating factors such as a high degree of consumer interest, a potentially significant economic impact on industry or consumers, and complex scientific and legal issues relating to nutrition, food composition, and food labeling.
In this role you will be rotated among several different projects related to the development or amendment of food standards of identity and food labeling policies and regulations; the development of responses to letters from Congress, industry, academia, consumers, or other government offices; and projects related to special agency initiatives.
Qualifications and Evaluations
To be basically qualified for the position, you must meet either A or B below:
A. A degree in one of the following: food technology, or dairy technology, microbiology, biology, chemistry, physics, or a related discipline or field of biological of physical science. The course work must have been comprised of at least 30 semester hours in the basic biological and physical sciences, and included at least 20 semester hours in food technology and closely related subjects, or 20 semester hours in subjects that can be applied directly to food technology.
B. A combination of education and experience – courses equivalent to a major, including the coursework specified, as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
A. At least one year of experience equivalent to the GS-09 level in the Federal Government. Specialized experience includes assisting in the review of citizen petitions or Agency requests to develop and/or amend regulations; evaluating food processes and food composition; assisting with responding to letters and inquiries from consumers, industry, academia and other government agencies on policy issues related to food labeling and food standards of identity; monitoring the status of regulatory issues and food labeling actions.
B. Posess at least 3 years of graduate level education leading to a Ph.D. that provided the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work. Such fields include dietetics, food, nutrition, food service management, institution management, food technology, or other closely related science.
