The primary purpose of the Scientist/Associate Professional position in Research Food Safety is to provide food safety support for the research and product development personnel located in the Minneapolis area. The Scientist/Associate Professional will review all incoming raw material requests and ensure that all appropriate documentation is received for approval.  This position will work with Cargill Flavor Systems to request flavor documentation used in research prototypes.  Additionally, the Scientist/Associate Professional will screen incoming prototypes to ensure that all raw materials used in the formulations have been approved and that the required documentation (e.g., ingredient declaration, nutrition label) is attached. The Scientist/Associate Professional will assist the Food Safety Coordinator with food safety training, facility inspections, environmental monitoring, and monthly reports.


A successful candidate will have experience in food safety and microbiology.  This position will require great interpersonal skills and self-initiative.  Also, this position will require occasional travel.


Principle Accountabilities

40% - Review and track all raw material submissions.  Request flavor documentation from Cargill Flavor Systems and match incoming documentation with the initial requests.

25%- Review all incoming product prototype formulas to ensure that all raw materials have been approved.  Screen prototypes for required documentation (e.g. ingredient declaration, nutrition label).

20% - Assist with coordinating research facility inspections and food safety audits of potential co-manufacturers, as needed.  Inspect labs on a monthly basis. 

10% - Assist with food safety training for all personnel involved in product application and development work

5% - Assist in helping manage the research programs for sanitation, environmental monitoring, and product security.


Unique Position Details

This is a full time position involving work that will impact the research and development activities of a number of locations in the Minneapolis area. Among these locations are the main research building, the laboratories at Freshwater, and the Parkers Lake Lab. This work will impact a number of BUs within the FIS platform.




         Bachelors Degree in Food Science or Microbiology with 2+ years of industry experience

         Knowledgeable in the areas of microbiology, food safety and food science

         Working knowledge and understanding of prerequisite programs and HACCP and the implementation of these programs

         Must be able to work effectively with a team as well as independently and possess excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills




         Production facility food safety experience

         Willing to reside in Minneapolis

         Willing to travel occasionally (5- 10 %)
