Job Description

The Associate Food Scientist position will focus on professional development within the Research and Development Department. This position is designed with an emphasis placed on developing and demonstrating technical expertise in food product development. The role of the Associate Food Scientist is to learn basic food technology skills by completing an orientation program, planning and conducting pilot plant experiments, working closely with senior level Food Scientists, and manage projects that are technically straight forward.

The basic food technology skills include learning:

  • Ralston Food’s product development process and organization,
  • relationships between ingredients and process,
  • testing methodology,
  • how to develop specifications, formulas, and labels,
  • project management,
  • statistical skills, and
  • computer software used in R&D.

Job Duties include:

  • Set up, operate, and clean the pilot plant equipment with minimal supervision. The equipment includes mixers, extruders, cookers, ovens, rolls, coating, and dryers.
  • Effectively document details of experiments: objectives of test, accurate formulas, processing conditions, required equipment and equipment setup, results and recommended next steps.
  • Support project work through assisting Senior Food Scientists with pilot plant and plant experiments.
  • Support project work through assisting Senior Food Scientists with developing specifications, formulations, and labels.
  • Plan, design and conduct pilot plant and lab coating experiments, document testing and results, evaluate data, and recommend next steps.
  • Manage projects that are technically straight forward with the supervision of a Senior Food Scientist.
  • Question processes and procedures. Suggest and test alternatives.
  • Interacts professionally and effectively with the R&D team to ensure completion of department objectives by working with other Food Scientists, pilot plant technicians, process engineers, quality improvement engineers, and specification administration.
  • Interacts professionally and effectively with operations management and sales/marketing to ensure completion of company objectives.
  • Receives technical guidance from senior Food Technologists on project problems and supervisory approval of project plans.
  • Able to lift up to 50 lbs., walk / stand for up to 70% of the time while performing daily tasks (pilot and plant trials), support product testing / projects on production floors requiring travel up and down stairs and ladders to platforms, and work in cold/hot plant environments.
  • Become proficient in Research and Development software such as the Project Plan Database, Formulation Software and Statistics Software.
  • A flexible schedule is also required to support testing as necessary. Occasionally, plant tests must be conducted during off shifts or even on weekends. Occasional travel is required.

Job Qualifications

  • B.S. Degree in Food Science (IFT Minimum Standards) or equivalent.
  • Relevant internship experience.
  • Understands basic food chemistry and food processes.
  • Plan, conduct, record experiments; draw logical conclusions.
  • Able to reach sound conclusions for basic food experiments
  • Has a basic understanding of statistical concepts.
  • Demonstrated Problem Solving and Strategic Thinking skills
