APPLETON — Food poisoning caused 135 Outagamie County jail inmates to fall ill last week, the Wisconsin State Laboratory of Hygiene said Wednesday.

Seven stool samples sent to the state lab tested positive for clostridium perfringens, a bacteria that causes cramping and diarrhea.

Officials at the Outagamie County health department suspect the dinner from Thursday night — a beef, turkey and gravy casserole with vegetables — is to blame. A tray of that food was sent to a state lab, and those results are still pending.
