The
number of shigella cases in Muskingum county is up to eight.
Zanesville-Muskingum County Health Department's Dr. Vicki Whitacre
says it has affected two adults and six children, with one person
being hospitalized.
"They were all at the daycare center," said Whitacre.
"So, yes, it was all related. We've not have any reports from
somebody outside the daycare center. "
Whitacre says all eight individuals are doing better, and the spread
of the shigella bacteria is slowing down.
"We haven't had a new case in over a week, which we're thankful
for," she said. "That doesn't mean it's totally over, but
we are hoping. "
Whitacre says effects of the bacteria include diarrhea, fever, and
dehydration.
Two cases of shigella were first reported back in July at the Rufus
Putnam school's daycare program.
