Malaysia: More Than 300 Students Down With Food Poisoning

ALOR STAR, Aug 14 (Bernama) -- More than 300 students of Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Agama Kedah, Mergong, came down with diarrhoea and vomiting early this morning and nine were warded.

A spokesman of the Sultanah Bahiyah Hospital said the nine were later discharged at about 3pm after they recovered.

The students were believed to have experienced diarrhoea after eating nasi jagung, honey chicken and eggs with sauce prepared by the school's dining hall operator at 6.30pm on Wednesday.

Kedah Health, Non-Governmental Organisations, Information and Human Capital Development Committee chairman Dr Ismail Salleh said that six of the nine warded students were female.

He said the school sent the students to the Mergong Clinic at 8am when their conditions showed no signs of improvement.

"The students were treated as outpatients and were allowed to go back to their hostels after treatment, except for the nine who had to be warded at the Sultanah Bahiyah Hospital," he said when contacted by Bernama.

The school principal and warden declined to comment.

A Form Two student, Izati Abdul Khalid, 14, said they experienced diarrhoea and vomiting at 3am after eating at the dining hall yesterday while another student,Mohd Khairil Ahar Mat Akhir, 17, said he and his friends had stomach pains at 2am.
