The Director of Food Product Development directs research and development for USANA's functional food products. As such, the individual works with senior R&D and Marketing staff to help develop food product strategies that help grow the business, and oversees worldwide development of new and improved food products to support USANA's mission and complement existing product line.

Oversees worldwide development of new and improved functional food products with emphasis on quality, optimized taste, mouthfeel, other organoleptics, cost of goods, manufacturability and stability. Also responsible for development of flavor components in chewable tablets, stick packs and other alternative delivery systems for dietary supplements. Bring new innovative functional food related ideas and concepts to USANA through extensive industry and academia networking. Emphasis is on science-based natural products with significant health benefits. Oversee product maintenance of USANA's existing functional food products. This includes solving and preventing quality, manufacturing and raw material issues, as well as identifying and implementing opportunities to reduce costs and improve manufacturing processes. Adapts new and existing products to USANA's international markets as needed; works closely with Regulatory Affairs and global Marketing to ensure full compliance to market-specific regulatory requirements and taste preferences. Work closely with in-house and third party manufacturing and packaging partners to implement and scale-up new and improved functional food products; provide ongoing support to help solve manufacturing and packaging issues. Act as technical spokesperson for USANA's functional food science and products both internally and externally. Understand and adhere to GMP policies and procedures. Other related duties as required or assigned.

BS, MS or PhD in Food Science or closely related field required. 5+ years of commercial experience in the formulation of functional foods, preferably involving powdered drink mixes, granulations, nutrition bars, beverages, chewable tablets, functional snacks and/or related products; and preferably involving formulation of functional foods for both domestic and international markets. 3+ years of experience, and proven success in directing and managing R&D staff and development laboratories. Working knowledge of functional food manufacturing and packaging techniques as well as quality protocols. Proven expertise in preparation and review of compliant food labels; both domestic and international. Extensively networked with flavor houses, raw ingredient suppliers, product development contract laboratories, manufacturers and relevant academic contacts. Experience in formulating functional foods using predominantly natural and/or organic ingredients. Excellent written and verbal communications skills, preferably with public speaking abilities. Excellent computer and quantitative skills, including management of Genesis (nutrition facts) databases. Proven ability to work well in cross-functional teams responsible for developing, registering, manufacturing, and promoting functional foods.
