Major Duties:

This position is located in an FDA District Office or Resident Post and represents the highest level of expertise in a district for domestic and international high-risk food program areas.  These areas include: low acid (LACF) and acified food (AF) canning and thermal processing; fish/seafood HACCP processing and preservation; food safety issues to determine compliance with FDA laws and regulations; and criminal investigations.  The incumbent represents the primary source of expertise in an assigned geographical area having responsibility t resolve the most difficult, controversial, and complex inspectional problems which involve a combination of scientific and regulatory responsibilities.

The incumbent in this position is expected to see and achieve a Level III Certification when the program is available for the specialist.


Qualifications:

A. Basic Requirement:

Applicants must have successfully completed a four year course of study leading to a Bachelor's or higher degree that included at least 30 semester hours in one or a combination of the following: biological sciences, chemistry, pharmacy, physical sciences, food technology, nutrition, medical science, engineering, epidemiology, veterinary medical science, or related scientific fields that provided knowledge directly related to consumer safety officer work. The 30 semester hours can include up to 8 semester hours in statistics, or course work that included the principles, theory, or practical application of computers or computer programming 

OR

Possess courses consisting of at least 30 semester hours in the fields of study described in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

Note: Since this position has a specific education requirement, all applicants must verify completion of this basic education requirement by submitting a copy of an official college transcript with the application. MINIMUM QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENT

Applicants must possess at least one year of experience, equivalent to at least the GS-12 level in the Federal service planning and conducting technical, complex, and multi-faceted inspections and in-depth investigations, and recommending compliance of establishments engaged in the manufacture of pharmaceuticals (human or veterinary); developing and implementing formal training programs for industry and state/local officials, and providing technical expertise to industry representatives. Duties required skill in interview and criminal investigation techniques and in-depth knowledge of the Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act. For investigations and inspections, limited guidance documents were available and proposed or new regulations were used to evaluate the industry.

What To Expect Next:

Once the online questionnaire is received you will receive an acknowledgement email that your submission was successful.  Based upon your score, you may be referred to the hiring official.  If your name is referred to the hiring official, you may be contacted directly by that office for a possible interview.

You will receive notice via email or by mail, if no email address was provided by you during the application process, once this process is completed (generally 4-6 weeks).
