Food Scientist

The Food Scientist will provide product development support to a wide range of growth/quality/cost savings projects from ideation through commercialization. Additionally, this position will work with operations, marketing/business teams, finance and other functional partners; acting as Product Development support on cross functional new product development and quality improvement/cost savings teams.

Responsibilities include:

Planning and executing experiments using established laboratory/pilot plant/operations methods

Working collaboratively with the Product Development team interpreting and translating results into solutions

Developing strong cross functional relationships within Product Development and through out the organization

Acting as key Product Development resource on projects

Developing product formulations under supervision, as well as responsible for writing product and raw material specifications

Collaborating with Sr. Formulations Scientist and product/process development team to investigate, plan, execute, evaluate and report on new product development and product improvement/cost reduction projects

Assisting in and at times leading the planning and execution of bench top and pilot plant trials, alternate vendor trials, and commercial plant tests to support new product/process projects as well as quality improvement and cost reduction projects

Assisting plant operations with product/formulation support for technical trouble-shooting

Writing, reviewing, and issuing product and ingredient specifications to support all project work

Keeping abreast of applicable manufacturing processes, safety procedures, GMPs, and food regulations

Developing project objectives and maintaining lab notebook and appropriate research documents

Actively seeking to enhance technical skills via project experience, seminars, professional meetings, additional course work and/or literature

Required skills:

A Bachelors Degree in Food Science or Biological Sciences, or related field, or an equivalent combination of education and/or product development experience, advanced degree preferred

A minimum of 1 to 4 years of experience in a product development or R&D environment

Basic knowledge and understanding of food ingredients, food chemistry, food processing, and food functionality

Must be able to comprehend technical articles, research papers, or presentation and apply technical knowledge learned

Must have the ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, draw valid conclusions, and offer solutions

Ability to travel to support project implementation up 20%

Must possess strong organizational and leadership skills with the ability to handle multiple projects

Strong written and verbal communication skills required

Must be computer literate, preferably in a Windows environment
