R&D Nutritionist – Blacksburg, VA
A Spectrum Brands company, United Pet Group (UPG) is a

passionate pet owners who seek the best for their pets.
The R&D Nutritionist is responsible for working with
Marketing and the R&D Manager to develop, revise and review the
chemical and nutritional value of new and existing products and to provide
support and provide expertise in the area of animal health and well being.
· Develop, revise and
review the composition and nutritional value of feeds, feed supplements,
and treats for companion animals, small animals, reptiles, fish and birds
· Work with marketing,
regulatory and QA in expanding existing treat and feed products and support
the development of new products
· Direct and analyze
stability studies for new and existing formulas
· Work with sourcing
to qualify new raw materials and new suppliers
· Investigate Consumer
Complaint samples and recommend and implement corrective actions if needed
· Gatekeeper for
updating formula data and product specifications in UPG databases
· Interface with
Marketing to understand their targets and objectives, and the specific
needs of the market
· Monitoring feed
formulations to meet quality, performance and animal health standards
· Assessing animal
treat and feed manufacturing techniques and providing recommendations for
best manufacturing practices
· Using computer
software to formulate diets, conduct research and generate reports
· Assist in the
development of product processing specifications
· Research the
effectiveness of dietary regimes
· High level of
prioritization and organization.
· Strong interpersonal
· Excellent written
and verbal communication skills; ability to communicate effectively with
all levels of the organization.
· Problem Solving and
· Strong PC and
Microsoft Office knowledge.
· SAP knowledge
· Ability to travel
domestically and internationally, typically less than 10% annually.
· Bachelor's Degree in
Agriculture, Life Science, Animal Science, Food Science, Veterinary
Science, Nutrition, or related field. Master's Degree preferred.
· Two (2)+ years of relevant experience.
· Experience working
with nutritional products in a manufacturing setting preferred.
· Knowledge of various
companion animals, e.g. cat, dog, bird, fish, reptile, ferret, hamster, and
guinea pig, a plus.
· Knowledge of Aafco, NASC or FDA preferred.
· Experience working
with Marketing on claim development and validation preferred.
