What is my job:

The job of the Culinary Innovation Center (CIC) Department Manager is to oversee the daily operation of the food manufacturing facility by maintaining regulatory compliance and ensuring each employee is given the opportunity to be successful while using continuous improvement principles to identify, develop, and implement best practices in order to continuously improve CIC efficiency and produce the highest quality foods for our customers.

How do I make a difference?

Managing CIC Operations

• Overseeing the daily food manufacturing operation, responsible for service levels, product transfers, contribution (profit), retention, diversity and development as well as interviewing, selecting and arranging training of new team members
• Ensuring product is produced to meet finished specifications
• Making quality and timely decisions based on analysis of data, wisdom, experience, and judgment
• Actively contributing to an injury-free work environment for self and peers by demonstrating human safety as the first consideration with all activities
• Building relationships with resource partners and business partners (Buyers, Distribution, QA, HR, Maintenance, Merchants, Risk Management, Security)
• Making scheduling adjustments as needed to maintain service levels in department; accounting for unexpected circumstances (e.g. weather, packaging or ingredient issues, equipment failure, labor)
• Sharing key metrics with all employees and setting departmental and individual goals

Maintaining Regulatory Compliance & Good Manufacturing Practices

• Ensuring regulations that are applicable are being followed
• Using knowledge of regulations governing operations including USDA, State Ag and Markets, FDA, HAACP, SQF (Safe Quality Foods), OSHA to monitor and address compliance and quality issues
• Ability to handle complex product/GMP issues, independently with effective results
• Holding employees accountable to Wegmans company manufacturing policies and work rules
• Ensuring others are following all safety procedures, including the use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), LOTO (Lock Out Tag Out), HACCP, and GMP’s (Good Manufacturing Practices)

• Demonstrating Good Manufacturing Practices to others and exercising due diligence in protecting CIC products

Continuously Improving Efficiency

• Uses knowledge of continuous improvement principles to make sound operational decisions that yield the greatest return
• Executing action plans to continuously improve the CIC including; planning ahead, prioritizing workload
• Ensuring department tasks are prioritized and completed efficiently to meet production needs and departmental goals
• Making recommendations for improvements to the products, production process or production area

What skills & experiences are required?

  • 3 or more years experience leading in a perishable food manufacturing/packaging facility.Subject matter expert on cutting edge manufacturing practices.
  • Regulatory Compliance Experience-uses knowledge of with FDA, USDA, HAACP, SQF, and OSHA, etc. to monitor and ensure compliance and quality
    • Efficiency & Equipment- Uses knowledge of Continuous Improvement to make sound operational decisions that yield the greatest return
    • Advanced working knowledge of systems including ERP system (ROSS preferred) and Time and Attendance (Kronos preferred)
    • Strong PC skills with working knowledge of Microsoft Office
    • Product Quality & Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) – ability to handle complex product/GMP issues independently with effective results
    • Use personal experience and passion to act as a source of culinary knowledge to educate customers and employees while evaluating financials to ensure quality and maximize results
    • Use available resources to pursue goals and challenges with the intent of achieving results, striving for continued excellence and taking appropriate risks (Managing the 5 Measures)
    • Demonstrate teambuilding by communicating a common purpose, empowering team members to contribute their best and selecting candidates with a variety of skills and styles for inclusion on the team

    • Use action planning techniques associated with completing tasks including scoping out the length and difficulty of projects, breaking down work into processed steps, managing deadlines and making adjustments for multiple demands.
    • Experience with risk evaluation: proactively identifying areas of potential risk exposure, thoroughly analyzing the situation to ensure the financial investment of a solution makes sense and implementing cost-effective controls to mitigate risk.

What skills, learnings, and experiences are preferred and will set me apart?

• Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering, Food Manufacturing/Processing/Packaging, Food Science
• Lean Six Sigma Green Belt certification. Mass manufacturing of prepared foods experience preferred.
• Conduct accurate cost benefit analysis in order to invest where most the value is added.
• Easily build relationships with others, gaining trust and support, finding common ground and using team-based approaches to solve problems and achieve goals
• Possess strategic business planning skills seizing opportunities for continuous improvement to shape the future direction of a department; facilitating others through the development of long-term goals; creating competitive and breakthrough strategic plans
