We are currently seeking an individual to be a member of a multi-disciplinary team at our Newton, Iowa location.


Job Summary


Responsible for conducting performance and energy tests on home appliances. Conducts complicated equipment and test setups. These may include tests without published requirements, or those involving unique features that require the use of independent judgment. Initiates recommendations for new equipment designs. Provides feedback and may assist in development of laboratory procedure guides (LPG). Provides training and assists others in the laboratory.

Job Responsibility


Examines test samples, reads measuring instruments, and operational instructions. Evaluates user interfaces, reviews Use and Care Guides of appliances, and conducts ergonomic assessments. Evaluates test performance, provides feedback regarding issues and/or problems with test and data sheets and reviews test and construction data with supervisor. Operates with minimal supervision within defined limits of responsibility.


Directs, builds and/or adapts setup and test equipment to new situations, based on data sheets and instructions from engineering department and clients. Trains staff in test setups and test methods. Initiates recommendations for new equipment designs and recommends solutions to observed test problems.


Operates various appliances, personal computer, and special laboratory equipment such as temperature indicating devices and spectrometers. Performs routine maintenance of designated test equipment and laboratory area.


Receives instructions from and reports data to engineers, other laboratory personnel and clients. Communicates with clients during the setup and performance of a test to demonstrate or otherwise illustrate equipment test methods and/or to discuss test results.


Use statistical analysis and apply appropriate methods to testing data. Practices and implements advanced statistical procedures (DOE's Regression, Correlation, Lean Sigma Techniques, etc.) routinely.


Communicates with department personnel to offer suggestions pertinent to equipment needs and arranges for designated disposal of samples upon completion of tests.


Records observed or calculated data on appropriate UL forms and prepare data sheets. Creates test reports and submits for manager review.


Provides training and assist others in the laboratory. Integrates continuous improvement concepts and techniques into all aspects of the job.


     Performs other duties as directed.


Required Skills


Some University education in food science or a related discipline plus four years directly related experience required.


Experience with internet, MS Excel, MS Word, and MS PowerPoint.


Knowledge of consumer habits, trends, and expectations.


Thorough technical knowledge of food preparation and food preservation.
