Position Summary:

Freshdirect is actively seeking a Director of Food Safety and Quality in the NYC area. The responsibilities of this role are numerous and include establishing programs within operations that will ensure the production of safe food. These programs may include HACCP systems, regulatory compliance, specifications and guidelines, sanitation standards and design, environmental monitoring, training, crisis management, policies and procedures, construction interventions, microbiological testing, new products, laboratory oversight and operating standards.

Responsibilities:

Essential functions:  

  • Represent FreshDirect with respect to the quality and safety of products and the food processing environment.  This responsibility includes participation in the management of crises involving products, and the on-going interpretation and reporting of information from our customers and suppliers
  • Support and provide direction to the organization for product and environmental pathogen prevention monitoring, training, HACCP and related customer/supplier initiatives. Provide HACCP guidance to the organization including HACCP plan reviews and validation
  • Directs the quality and product safety components for all Food Safety driven projects through quality planning, specifications development, and project oversight for compliance to GMP's and other company policies and guideline
  • Perform and document assigned investigations (e.g., audits, product complaints, discrepancies in production) and propose appropriate corrective preventative actions for associated issues and events relating to food safety. Assist with the timely completion of corrective/preventative action
  • Assures that all products and packs produced at the facility are safe for consumption and conform to the intended product design. This includes being responsible for change management and process improvement as the Quality Champio
  • Lead the organization in the documentation of procedures and processes, through the implementation and oversight of all quality programs including HACCP, SSOP, Product Labeling, and Nutritional Labelin
  • Perform and document external audits of suppliers, vendors, manufacturers, and service providers to identify deficiencies and non-conformances, assess and report the level of compliance to regulatory and quality requirements, and assure implementation of appropriate corrective and preventive action
  • Manage team members to assure skills development and certification, resource planning and FS, Q/A project execution especially, management training and the on-going maintenance of a learning environment

Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications

 

  • Bachelor’s degree, preferably with a major in Food Microbiology, Food Technology, and Food Science. Masters preferred
  • Seven (7+) plus years of experience in food safety in a manufacturing environment; including strong understanding of microbiology and food science

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Current knowledge of regulatory government requirements (i.e. FDA, USDA, etc.) rules and regulations
  • Must have considerable knowledge of HACCP, SSOP and GMPs as it applies to the food industry
  • Established reputation to liaise with government regulatory agencies and consumer associations 
  • Expertise in handling product recalls, public relations, and damage control
  • Expertise in food safety (Raw and ready-to-eat)
  • Quality systems standards, including GMPs
  • Good knowledge of latest pathogen detection techniques
  • Experience in handling customer and consumer complaints
  • Food microbiology, analytical chemistry, and sensory methods
  • Must possess strong leadership, communication and organizational skills.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint

Working Conditions:

  • Work environment includes plant, warehouse, production and non-production areas and plant grounds
  • This position may require approximately 5% travel and work/maintenance coverage beyond the normal hours, shift, and on weekends/holidays
  • Ability to tolerate temperatures of 35 degrees or below while working in the plant.
