Director of Quality Assurance and Food Safety

Job Summary
Reporting to the President and CEO, this position is responsible for effectively managing and implementing policies and programs as they relate to food safety, quality and defense. This person will monitor and assess manufacturing, purchasing and logistic operations from food safety risk and program compliance for the entire company. The Director will serve as liaison among production, purchasing and R&D departments to insure all specifications are pertinent, accurate and followed. This position will work closely with senior management to maintain impeccable quality and cleanliness standards on an audit ready every day basis. This position will assure compliance with federal and state regulations including HACCP program guidelines.

  • Ongoing development, implementation and management of all aspects of quality programs. Includes maintaining SOPs and product specifications for all products. Evaluation of current practices and implementation of quality assurance program changes.
  • Responsible for management of HACCP regulations.
  • Ensure compliance with applicable laws, regulations and food safety and defense standards issued by the FDA and other federal, state and local agencies involved with food safety activities. Maintain up to date records for compliance with federal, state and HACCP regulations.
  • Responsible for ongoing employee training activities designed to keep employees knowledgeable and informed of SOPs, methods, and Good Manufacturing Procedures. Also ensures that standards for personal hygiene are met and implements corrective actions where needed.
  • Works with plant supervisors to assure compliance with SOPs and GMPs.
  • Approves all co-packing facilities for manufacturing company products.
  • Oversees the company’s sanitation program and ensures that the production staff is following proper procedures and programs for sanitation. Works closely with chemical companies, exterminators and other related resources to manage sanitation program and address deficiencies/problems.
  • Manages environmental program including ongoing laboratory testing of environment for pathogens. Addresses deficiencies with appropriate personnel and implements corrective actions where necessary.
  • Oversee and manage customer quality inspections and the administration of quality surveys and requests.
  • Works closely with industry workgroups and other agencies to ensure the company’s ongoing participation in all aspects of the industry’s food safety programs.
  • Provide technical guidance on the purchase of materials and equipment related to food safety and sanitation issues.
  • Maintain corporate recall programs so that product can be successfully withdrawn or recalled from market when necessary.
  • Train plant operations related to food safety, sanitation and QC procedures and programs and ensure they are being implemented and followed.
  • Staff and supervise our seasonal labs in our fresh fruit operation and receiving station. Ensures that all GMP and sanitation procedures are followed in these general areas not only in season but out of season as well.

Position Requirements

  • Bachelors Degree in food science or related field.
  • Minimum of 10 years of supervisory food quality control and quality assurance experience in manufacturing.
  • Extensive experience with HACCP programs.
  • Experience in developing and implementing quality assurance and quality control programs.
  • Effective communicator with the ability to develop and manage diverse teams.
  • Strong organizational and prioritization skills.
  • Evidence of regulatory and food safety and defense knowledge and experience.
  • Strong problem solving and analytical skills with good statistical analysis capabilities.
  • Ability to supervise and manage a department of 5 to 6 people.
  • The ability to solve problems as a team is critical in this position.
