Canadian prime minister promises independent investigation of Maple Leaf outbreak

Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper said Wednesday that once the outbreak of listeriosis linked to Maple Leaf Foods' Bartor Road facility in Toronto is over, the government will supervise an independent investigation of the incident.

He said the investigation would aim to "make sure that as we go forward and as we make changes to our system, that this kind of thing can't happen again," CBC News reported.

The outbreak, which prompted Maple Leaf to recall more than 200 products produced at the plant, has been confirmed as the cause of 12 deaths so far.
