Raw Material Scientist-ELI00293 - Pennsylvania


Purpose of Role:

This position performs cocoa and nutmeat raw material research and technology development in support of Mars Global Chocolate efforts. The position is responsible for carrying out research and technology development internally and will be required to work externally with suppliers and external research institutions. Required to communicate both orally and written, across functions, to facilitate value capture by the business. Position facilitates research that may lead to the discovery of new intellectual property, which can be used to drive business growth.

Principal Accountabilities

         Execute research plans and conducts research on cocoa and nutmeat raw materials.

         Responsible for understanding the stability and quality of cocoa and nutmeat raw materials and their impact on finished product.

         Works to develop and/or ensure basic understanding scientific fundamentals of the cocoa and nutmeat raw materials and their interactions in our products and processes

         Required to develop key raw materials specifications, recipes, and work with process team to establish key raw materials process specifications.

         Documents all research in lab notebooks and issues research reports.

         Ensures freedom to operate can contribute to IP (invention disclosures, patents, and trade secrets).

         Develops innovative solutions to raw material issues and provides raw material technical solutions and innovation, to product development teams and Commercial buyers.

         Collaborates with external suppliers and researchers.

         Required to do research from field to finished product, including research from literature review, laboratory analysis, pilot plant trials and plant trials.

         Keeps current with the literature in the field and leads the research and technology development for raw materials internally, and with our external partners.

         Contributes to business relevant IP so that it can be leveraged for business growth or cost savings.

         Planning horizon is typically 1-3 years as research and discovery is typically a long-term endeavor.

         Builds functional expertise and knowledge for raw materials in the areas of growing/producing, harvesting, storage, processing, and stability and shelf life.


Key Experiences

         Demonstrated record of success performing research in food, food ingredients or related systems.

         Experience in the food industry as a researcher including experience managing technicians and/or external research is a plus.

Desired Education

         Food Science, Engineering, Chemistry or equivalent BS degree required, with a strong preference for an advanced degree.
