Career Opportunities: R&D Intern - Sweets and Refreshments Research (27461)

Overview
Residing at the Hershey Company's Technical Center, this position involves a unique opportunity to work within the Food Research & Technology team. This team is responsible for evaluating new technologies and ingredients for improving current processes and products, and providing new product opportunities through researching new discoveries. The Intern will work independently, and as a part of various teams, toward goals on project assignments. The individual should be able to interact with many different types of individuals including technical support, various scientists, product developers, marketing, and management.

This successful candidate will spend roughly 50% of their time in the lab developing and evaluating products, and 50% in the pilot plant testing processing technologies. One project of major importance during this co-op experience will include process research related to extrusion of confectionery products.


This internship is from January 2014 August 2014.

Responsibilities
The successful candidate will assist research efforts geared to providing solutions in various areas for the Hershey Company. These areas may include confectionery formulations, food ingredient interactions, and developing new confectionery processes. Project responsibilities include carrying out experimental designs, performing experiments, and reporting results. Daily work responsibilities will include use of analytical equipment, completing experiments at the bench-top, analyzing experimental data and executing experiments on pilot scale equipment. It may also include use of engineering and math theory to model confectionery production processes.

Qualifications:


Education
Chemical Engineering or Food Engineering major. Food Science courses are a plus.
Minimum GPA: 3.2

Experience
Prior internships with related experience are a plus

Knowledge/ skills/ abilities
Strong interest in hands-on work and problem solving
Highly motivated
Comfortable with laboratory and pilot plant equipment
Proficient in written and communication skills
Computer literate (Excel, Word, PowerPoint)
Able to work in a team environment
Able to work independently
Flexible as priorities change
