The Department of Food Science, School of Environmental and Biological Sciences at Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey is seeking a tenure-track Assistant Professor effective July 1, 2010 in the growing and exciting field of Functional Food Engineering.

Successful applicant should hold a PhD degree in one of the following or in closely related fields: Food Science, Chemical Engineering, Biophysics, Physical Chemistry, Material Science and Polymer Science. Previous experience in the following areas is a plus: food functional materials, soft materials, stimuli-responsive/smart materials, self-assembling structures, controlled release and delivery systems, surface chemistry, protein engineering, biomaterials, metabolic engineering, etc.
Applicants who can establish an externally funded and internationally recognized research program in the area of application of nanoparticulate, biopolymeric and colloidal structural materials to increase bioavailability and nutrition value of food relevant systems will be given preference. It is also expected that special emphasis in the new research program will be given to the development of processing technologies that are capable of modifying the molecular structure of functional macromolecules and to produce ordered structures on the micro- and nano-scale levels for better safety and quality of agricultural and food products.
Outstanding communication skills are required with an ability to effectively teach courses at the undergraduate and graduate levels in Food Science/Engineering and related fields. Postdoctoral and/or industrial experience is highly desirable.

The Department of Food Science has a basic science orientation, which includes highly productive research programs in food biology, chemistry, and engineering. The Department is located in a modern research complex, which includes the Center for Advanced Food Technology with state of the art facilities in the School of Environmental and Biological Sciences on Cook Campus and is in close proximity to other basic and applied science departments. The Department is also strategically situated in the midst of many research centers of leading international food corporations.
