Food Scientist - Western Minnesota

Schedule: Monday-Friday 8am-5pm

SUMMARY: 

The Food Scientist is responsible for the formulation of new and existing products, maintaining records of procedures and results of laboratory and plant trials.  The Food Scientist analyzes data, develops ingredient specifications, and works directly with customers on new products and reformulations.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

 Formulates new thermally processed food products including preparation of lab samples, sourcing raw materials and ingredients.
 Develops formulas and conducts laboratory trials of formulas.
 Manages development and reformulations with customers.
 Sets up and monitors plant scale-ups.
 Maintains records of procedures and results of plant trials.
 Cost reduction and product improvement of existing products through formulations and process improvements.
 Processes pilot or full-scale retort equipment.
 

Required skills:

Education and Experience:
 Bachelor's degree (B. A.) in Food Science or related field.
 Five to ten years of food related R&D experience and/or training.
 Experience with a range of thermally processed products including meats, chilis and soups a plus.
      
Skills:
 Computer skills including spreadsheets and data analysis.
 Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
 Advanced mathematical and reasoning skills.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: 

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear.  The employee is regularly required to taste or smell.  The employee is occasionally required to stand, walk, use hands and fingers, handle or feel objects, tools or controls, reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; and stoop kneel, crouch or crawl.

The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 15 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.  The employee must be able to physically load cookers which can involve pushing loaded baskets.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

Position spends most days in a moist hot product kitchen.
