This position manages the Food Safety & Environmental Services Program and staff. Coordinates food safety and environmental services activities and serves as the staff expert in matters pertaining to the environmental control of disease transmitted via food and environmental sources; Manages and directs the work activities of four environmental staff and one administrative assistant. Responsible for interpreting and implementing State policy and rules on environmental health, food safety and sanitation. Coordinates county environmental health department evaluations. Manages the preparation of monthly data and annual program reports. Responsible for the quality and quantity of program inspection activities by professional staff. Oversees the school garden program and develops and revises the school garden guidelines as necessary. Administers and manages the program budget and grants. Manages preparation and implementation of county health department delegation agreements. Coordinates the Statewide standardization and training of county health department environmental health Sanitarians; Services as the Sanitarian Council Chairman. Coordinates the annual conference of Registered Sanitarians. In absence of Office Chief, this position assumes responsibilities of the Acting Office Chief. Performs other duties as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (KSAs):

Knowledge of program and personnel management; program administration, program evaluation; budget monitoring, resource utilization and prioritization. Knowledge of word processing, graphic presentation, statistical analysis and database manipulation using software. Knowledge of food safety, environmental health and public health. Knowledge of regulatory role and functions of county health departments, Indian Health Service Units, Tribal health Units and other agencies.

Skills in managing and motivating personnel, strong skills in technical writing and analyzing and assessing the significance of human environmental exposures. Some experience with rule writing, considerable skill in planning and coordinating prevention and mitigation public policy strategies to protect the public health from environmental contaminants. Demonstrate ability to communicate technical information both orally and in writing. Strong analytical skills as applied to the evaluation and interpretation of health-based data. Exercise good judgment in making decisions with regards to compliance and enforcement.

Successful candidate must be a Arizona Registered Sanitarian and have a valid Arizona Driver’s license.

Selective Preference: The preferred candidate will have experience with food safety inspections, compliance enforcement, and public health programs. A successful candidate for this position will hold a Master’s Degree in Public Health or related field or hold a Bachelor’s Degree in a relevant science and experience survising and managing similar programs.


Position is required to perform work at/attend meetings at alternate locations and/or travel when necessary, which requires the use of either a state or personal vehicle. An employee in this position must sign a State of Arizona Driver Authorization form when hired, which allows ADHS HR staff to obtain the motor vehicle driving record of the employee.
