Food Stability Scientist

Job Description: In this role, the successful candidate will be working as part of the Product Guidance and Insights (PGI) team and guide R&D Teams to ensure the required shelf life quality information is generated for the business team. This will entail using consultation to determine the ideal project approach using historical data through math models and foundational documents, and designing and managing storage tests to fill knowledge gaps as required.

In this role you will:

  • Collaborate with the TAPPI lab, Analytical physical testing, Microbiology, Product and Packaging R&D, QRO, Technical Services, Sensory Scientists/Engineers, and pertinent external partners.
  • Work directly with customers and business teams.
  • Independently consult, design, and manage the appropriate storage studies to meet business needs and enhance product foundational knowledge.
  • Expected to create, modify, and apply predictive models to meet business needs.
  • Interpret test results in context of project objectives and foundational learning in terms of product key attributes, quality measures, and consumer expectations.
  • Communicate insights to clients/project teams and recommend next steps.
  • Actively develop platform specific foundational knowledge as per individual project results and disseminate to pertinent teams.
  • Serve as advocate for the application of product foundational knowledge and brand protection for product development teams.
  • Train R&D, Packaging and QRO on storage quality theory and best practices.
  • Communicate product variation insights and findings to clients/project teams and recommend next steps.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Masters degree (Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Packaging Engineering, or Food Science and Technology preferred) In lieu of MS degree, would consider Chemical Engineering Bachelors degree
  • 2 yrs experience required, 3-5 yrs experience preferred
  • Fundamental understanding of potential chemical reactions and mechanisms that will influence the storage quality of food.
  • Strong problem solving skills
  • Strong applied math skills; including regression methods, design of experiments, and multivariate analysis techniques
  • Experience with designing statistical experiments and communicating insights derived from technical data to a project team
  • LIMS software preferred, however not required


  • Ability to apply pertinent information from broad range of disciplines, including Food Chemistry, Food Physical Chemistry, Food Engineering, Microbiology, Sensory Science, and Statistics
  • Must be able to consult effectively with ITQ clients and project teams.
  • Strong written and influence skills to effectively interpret and communicate product insights.
  • Ability to leverage and collaborate with other technical resources and leverage existing foundational data (Labware) to effectively lead multiple projects.
  • Strong prioritization skills.
