Senior Scientist, Biodefense and Food Safety – Austin, TX

POSITION SUMMARY

This position is responsible for organizing, supervising and conducting daily research and development activities for Biodefense and Food Safety projects. These responsibilities include designing experiments for assay research and development, leading a project core team with multi-department team members, and supervising laboratory personnel.

ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES

Key Responsibilities of the Job:

o    Supervise and conduct laboratory experimental work

o    Design research plans for large interactive projects

o    Collaborate with academic and industry partners where necessary

o    Troubleshooting experiments

o    Lead role in writing protocols, kit documentation, SOPs and reports

o    Provide advice and guidance to Biodefense and Food Safety and train Scientists and Associate Scientists.

o    Openly interact with Director of Research to resolve critical issues and concerns affecting performance of Research staff.

o    Be part or lead of a project core team for evaluation studies

o    Actively participate in the design and development of new research projects

o    Participate in design and writing of grant and contract proposals

JOB REQUIREMENTS

Competencies:

o    “Hands on” experience with sample preparation, protein and nucleic acid laboratory procedures, preferably on Luminex platforms

o    Good theoretical and practical understanding of detection technology in general

o    Reasonable understanding of Design Control (21 CFR 820, ISO 13485)

o    High level of skill at writing scientific and technical documents, as evidenced by authorship on publications

o    Learning on the Fly—learns quickly/open to change

o    Peer Relationship—cooperative, team player, trusted and supported by peers

o    Presentation Skills—effective in all settings such as one-on-ones, with small or large groups, with peers or bosses, etc.

o    Priority Setting—focuses on what is most important

o    Problem Solving— identifies complex problems and reviews related information to develop and evaluate options and implement solutions

o    Written Communications—effectively communicates in writing

Required Education/Training:

o    Masters degree with 8 years experience

o    PhD. with 5 years experience

Required Certifications/License/Special Skills:

o    Highly organized with proven time management and project management skills

o    Good interpersonal skills

o    Good written and verbal communication skills

Required Work Experience:

o    Minimum of 5 years experience in sample preparation, nucleic acid assay or protein design or related experience

o    Experience leading a research team

o    Experience in a GMP and/or FDA regulated environment

o    Experience working independently in a fast-paced environment with rapidly changing priorities

o    Experience with applying for and working with extramural funding

WORKING CONDITIONS

o    Must work onsite at Luminex office at least 90% of the time

o    Travel may be required approximately: 10% of the time

o    Work is performed in a typical laboratory environment. Occasional work in a BSL-II laboratory is required.

o    Possible exposure to biological or chemical hazards.
