Job Purpose: The Clemson University Cooperative Extension Service is charged with meeting the increasing demands of these companies to produce safe, nutritious, and globally competitive food products. This position will support the South Carolina food manufacturing industry and food business entrepreneurs in providing greater economic development for new innovative food products and/or other value added agricultural products.

Position Description: Clemson Extension Associate

Primary position responsibilities are:
Statewide food safety program development
o Creation of new innovative food safety programs that may utilize media and distance technology for SC food processors and potential food entrepreneurs.
o Primary contact for county agents assisting entrepreneurs and businesses in the food safety program area.
o Support the State Extension Food Safety Program Team Leader on other food safety and biosecurity educational programs.
Coordinate food product testing for SC food industry (20%): Coordinate product testing for SC food processors and entrepreneurs producing low acid canned foods (LACF), acidified canned foods, acid canned foods and other food products.
Develop and coordinate applicable food safety training programs to strengthen the knowledge and expertise of county agents working in the food safety program area.
Serve as a member of the Extension Food Safety & Nutrition Program team and work collaboratively with members of other Extension program teams focused on economic development
Participate in in-service training, professional development and activities related to the food safety & nutrition program team.
Assess and document program impacts such as participant certification, knowledge gain, intent to change or adopt practices, and/or practice or behavior change. Report program value and impact through CUMIS and other communication means such as marketing brochures, web sites, and case statements.
Seek external sources of funding to help support program delivery. External funding may come from generated funds (fees for programs), grants, contracts, gifts.

This person will work under the direction of the Extension Food Safety Program Team Leader in cooperation with appropriate Extension faculty in the Department of Food, Nutrition & Packaging Sciences and with the members of the Food Safety & Nutrition agent team.

Education, training, experience:

Position requirements:
Earned B.S. degree in Food Science, Food Technology, Family & Consumer Sciences or related field required; earned M.S. preferred.
Expertise in food safety extension programming preferred.
Excellent organizational and communication skills
Ability to work with appropriate professionals in a collegial team atmosphere.
Ability to work with multiple public extension audiences in South Carolina.
Knowledge of basic food product analysis techniques and equipment operation a plus.

Position Location: Successful candidate will select a home base at the Anderson, Greenville, or Spartanburg County Extension office and will travel to the Clemson University campus an average of 2 days weekly.
