Performs and initiates research and development projects with supervision and technical direction to develop new products and improve/modify existing products, and investigates properties of ingredients, their interaction and effects on the final product; communicates results and recommendations of research and participates in the implementation of recommendations. The Research & Development Laboratory is responsible for the development and implementation of all new and improved products for the Wrigley Company worldwide. This responsibility is all encompassing and includes: designing and/or improving products to meet the needs of consumers in each market in which the Company does business; the research, testing and scale-up of production technologies which provide for efficient and productive chewing gum, OTC healthcare and confection manufacturing processes; packaging research to identify and implement packaging technologies which protect the product while maintaining overall appearance; and the continuing research into new technologies which are required to meet the future needs of the Corporation. The Product Development Scientist II reports to a Junior Manager, Supervisor or Senior Product Developer within the Research & Development Department.


This is a position with project management responsibilities. Project Management and Technical Development will be part of the training in this position and will be taught through classes and internal mentoring. The position holder initiates and performs laboratory research projects. The work of the position holder contributes to the development of new and improved products.

Principle Activities Performed by the Incumbent:

1. As a "Project Leader" for low to medium difficulty projects, performs and initiates research and development projects on new and/or existing formulations and products; communicates results and recommendations of research to Laboratory Management, Production, and Marketing Management, and participates in the implementation of these recommendations.

2. Investigates properties of various ingredients, their interaction and effects on final products; develops, tests, and evaluates new alternative formulations and products, and participates in the development of new or modified manufacturing processes.

3. Coordinates with other R&D groups and with Production and Quality Assurance to test new and/or improved formulations and products in full-scale production conditions.

4. Applies professional knowledge and experience in developing research concepts related to product needs.

5. Provides technical assistance to associate plants as requested, which may require onsite visits; works with outside consultants, suppliers and testing laboratories on related research projects. Performs scale up procedures of confectionary products alone or in cooperation with local experts in Wrigley or cooperating manufacturing plants.

6. may direct activities of a staff of technicians (any level) assigned to a research project; provides guidance and assistance to less experienced chemists in achieving their job goals and successful completion of research projects.

7. Identifies problem areas, patenable opportunities and competitive advantages and initiates research projects related to their resolution.

8. Performs other projects assigned by the assigned group leader, manager or supervisor and other senior Wrigley personnel.

9. Learns project management and technical development skills through project work, training and mentoring. Responsible for investigating options and checking steps with mentors.

·         Degree in Food Science, Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, or related field is required

·         One year experience in product development or related field

·         Must be able to effectively communicate research results to the appropriate laboratory, Production, Quality Assurance and other personnel.

·         Basic personal computer skills (word processing, spreadsheets, etc.) and should be capable of learning database systems.

·         Requires good human relation skills to effectively interact with other Company personnel.
