Description:

Snack food manufacturer located in the Chicago area.

This position will report directly to the VP of Innovation and Quality.

The Microbiologist will be responsible for the development, execution and maintenance of company Food Safety and Microbiological policies.

Provides microbiological expertise and guidance to manufacturing, QA and suppliers regarding process risk and microbial stability of products.

Serves as primary internal and external consultant on all microbiological concerns/issues.

Ensures each manufacturing facility and vendors have required micro procedures and programs in place.

Duties and Responsibilities:

• Monitors food processes in each manufacturing facility to access microbial risks and microbial stability of products.

• Acts as a liaison and consults with other departments on microbiological and sanitation issues.

• Works with QA, operations, and sanitation to identify and troubleshoot sources of contamination.

Reviews technical problems, recommends solutions, and anticipates major problems to key operations.

• Works with customers and suppliers to identify and troubleshoot sources of contamination.

• Executes the company micro policy.

Ensures compliance through facility and documentation audits.

Revises/updates as needed.

• Executes the company environmental monitoring program.

• Develops and validates protocols for microbiological testing of products.

Develops sampling instructions, testing methods and reporting protocol.

Communicates and coordinates efforts of outside laboratories.

• Performs and reports trend analysis of laboratory test results and product failures.

• Ensures each facility maintains accurate records of all results and procedures.

Assures a high degree of accuracy in all test results obtained.

• Assists operations/QA in internal facility audits.

• Develops, executes and maintains Vendor Approval and Qualification program.

Provides expert auditing of select vendors.

• Provides technical guidance and educational training to QA and operations in the area of food microbiology and environmental practices.

• Develops appropriate databases and computer programs to track and analyze microbiological results.

• Assists in providing the appropriate responses to customer requests for pertinent product microbiological information.

• Works at other duties / tasks / special projects as assigned by the VP Innovation and Quality Systems.

Qualifications:

• Bachelor’s Degree in Microbiology or in a Biological Science.

• Minimum of 10 years of microbiological experience in the food industry.

• Experience/knowledge in food microorganisms, microbiological techniques, quality principals, process validation, FDA compliance, HACCP/Food Safety, GMP’s and conducting food plant audits.

• Strong organization, data analysis, record keeping, analytical thinking and problem solving skills.

• Self motivated/directed and ability to lead and motivate others.

• Highly proficient in computer software / desktop applications (such as MS Word, MS Excel, Outlook, Power Point.
