Norwegian diabetes gala hit by food poisoning

OSLO—A gala dinner organized by the Norwegian diabetes association came to an abrupt halt at the weekend after half of the participants came down with acute food poisoning, the association said Monday.

"We have counted 101 people suffering from intestinal problems, 33 of whom had to be hospitalized," the secretary general of the association Bjoernar Allgot told Agence France-Presse.

The organization had planned a festive celebration for its 60th anniversary, inviting some 230 employees and contacts to a gala dinner at a hotel near Oslo.

But during the dinner "the tables suddenly emptied," Allgot said.

"Many of the guests began to suffer from violent vomiting, diarrhea and stomach cramps. ... Some of them couldn't even make it to their rooms or toilets on time. We had to cancel," he said.

He said the sudden sickness was "very probably" due to food poisoning.

Norway's food agency said it had opened an investigation.
