Position Summary:

The Quality Specialist leads the processing of all raw material supplier approval and testing requirements for Domestic and International Businesses. This role works across procurement, R&D, OSC plants and suppliers to maintain a compliant approved supplier system. This position will lead coordination of all approved supplier documentation, supplier ratings and risk calculations and will audit testing and approval systems to ensure conformance to all centralized system requirements. The position supports supplier incident problem solving, capabilities assessments, audits, food safety risks/program reviews, and verifies supplier quality systems are in place to consistently deliver and improve raw material supplier performance.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

  • This individual works across Corporate and plant Quality teams, product development, research sciences and procurement to initiate and help coordinate all ingredient and packaging supplier approvals. Scope of approved supplier database includes co-packer and International suppliers. Ensures an integrated approved supplier system is maintained with required documentation. Leads document requests and tracks each supplier through the approval process. Responsible for keeping an updated approved supplier central database.
  • Influences the integrity of the sample testing program, test results, timeliness and report accuracy in the testing database.
  • Required to read and analyze lab results, and technical documentation from suppliers for the approved supplier database. This assessment includes HACCP plans, 3rd party audits, supplier surveys, and all related quality systems. This food safety risk assessment role includes conducting searches on FDA recalls and warning letter activities across the approved supplier base and for new potential suppliers.
  • The individual is responsible for many technical document writing requirements. These include the development of related raw material supplier procedures, technical analysis and reports of supplier incidents. Writes procedure for ingredient testing programs, supplier approvals, COA analysis, and supplier testing and approval database use. Working with Procurement and product development to ensure documents are completed prior to completion of product testing, and before commercialization.
  • Support ingredient and packaging supplier issue resolutions. Uses problem solving techniques to work with plants, suppliers, and procurement resources on each incident. Will lead specific incidents using a standard process and form to document root cause corrective action and connect to both the supplier complaint process and the supplier performance files.
  • Uses statistical techniques to quantify capability of suppliers to meet ingredient and packaging specifications and for OSC functionality needs. Assists in preparing quality guidance including statistical tools and training material for suppliers and OSC plants where needs are identified
  • Will be able to lead supplier visits and audits as identified by the annual risk based audit program. Will support the global supplier audit program planning and tracking.
  • Manages the information systems which drive the supplier performance metrics.

Minimum Knowledge, Skill, and Ability Requirements:

This position requires excellent collaborative and problem solving skills. A strong, broad technical background is needed with expertise in the areas of Quality Systems, Process Control and Auditing Protocols. Backgrounds in Food Chemistry, Food Microbiology are beneficial.

This individual needs to be very familiar with food manufacturing so that they can effectively evaluate risks and best practices at production facilities.

  • Bachelor's degree required. Food Science, Chemistry, or other Sciences preferred.
  • Three years related experience working with manufacturing, suppliers and audits is preferred.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills are required with specific skills in the area of policy and procedure development and documentation.
  • Special technical writing experience with procedures, specifications and audit reports
