Philippines: Food poisoning downs 51 elderly in Capiz

MANILA, Philippines -- Fifty one senior citizens were rushed to the hospital on Wednesday for feared food poisoning in Roxas City, Capiz, a police official said.

The victims, members of the Office of the Senior Citizens Affairs (OSCA) in that city complained of severe stomach aches and headaches after eating chopsuey (mixed vegetables) served during lunch at the Roxas City Center in celebration of Senior Citizen's Week, said Chief Superintendent Isagani Cuevas, regional director of Region VI.

Twenty-five of the victims were rushed to the St. Anthony Hospital; 21 at the Capiz Memorial Hospital; and five at the Emmanuel Hospital.

Cuevas also said that there were still an “undetermined number” of senior citizens who were sent home after a brief check-up with doctors.

The Capiz Provincial Health Office is currently conducting an investigation on the incident.

primary health centre Ramesh Tewari said so far 45 people have been provided medical aid while seven who are seriously ill were admitted to the PHC.
