2nd Shift Back-Up Quality Assurance (QA) Technician - Florence, AL



Position Summary: 


Back-up Quality Assurance technician is responsible for monitoring and insuring a high standard of food quality at the pre-operational and operational stages of production. Starting Wage: $9.40/hr


Essential Duties and Responsibilities: 

  • Must be familiar with all aspects associated with all duties of being a Quality Assurance Technician - Jr.
  • Communicate with various levels of Managers, Supervisors, Team Leaders and employees.
  • Must be cross trained in all departments of the plant.  This will include Incoming material inspection, working with USDA Inspectors and knowledge of regulations, HACCP rules and labeling.
  • Must have some training in laboratory work which includes shelf life work, microbiology, and environmental work.
  • Computer knowledge including AS400, spreadsheet applications.
  • Monitor through inspection the assigned production line(s) for product and packaging specifications, temperatures, regulatory compliance, sanitation effectiveness, and good manufacturing practices.
  • Monitor and record product weights, product temperatures, room temperatures, product codes and dates, levels of residual oxygen in gas-flushed packages and the appearance of the product.
  • Verify and record product count, accuracy of scales, vignette, tare weights, metal detectors, and proper use of gloves and hand dip stations.
  • Check and record component codes, identifications and dates.
  • Verify that USDA labels are used properly and that the labels are approved.
  • Perform pre-operational sanitation inspections on production lines as needed and accurately record results.
  • Conduct on-going sanitation inspection of production lines and related facilities during production operation hours.
  • Make any necessary corrections to ensure a quality product.
  • Provide written and/or computerized reports of the monitoring results to designated management personnel.
  • Carry out any special tasks per the request of the QA Manager, Assistant QA Manager, or QA Supervisor.
  • Cross-train as Quality Assurance Technician in various other departments as deemed necessary by the QA Manager, Assistant QA Manager, or QA Supervisor.


Additional Responsibilities:

  • Perform all other duties that may be necessary and required to execute this position's responsibilities.
  • Be capable of performing mathematical calculations such as percentages, averages, etc.
  • Be able to perform sensory evaluations, such as flavor, odor, visual (including color and shades of color) and tactile.
  • Have physical ability to transport containers of product (up to 30lbs) to and from various locations in the plant.
  • Be able to withstand temperature extremes from below 0o F (-10o F in some freezers) to over 100o F (110o F at cookers and in some parts of the warehouse in summer).
  • Must demonstrate good judgment and critical decision making skills.
  • Must be able to maintain regular and predictable attendance, to arrive at scheduled hours, and work overtime as needed.




  • Two-Four year college degree preferred but not required in biology, microbiology, food science, nutrition, or a related field of study.
  • Employee must have at least seven years of experience in Quality Assurance work and a full working  
  • knowledge of our operation, policies, customers, specifications
  • 5-7+ years of experience in the meat slaughter or processing industry preferred, but not required.
  • Knowledge of laboratory procedures and reports.
  • Basic understanding of HACCP. 
  • Strong verbal, written, analytical, and persuasive skills and the ability to interact effectively with all levels of employees and management.
  • Have good verbal and written communication skills that would allow him/her to interact with others in a professional manner.
  • Adhere to safety and conduct rules and policies.
  • Maintain efficiency and quality standards.
  • Must be able to work well with others.
