This position is a member of the Food Safety Team that makes complex risk based food safety decisions that have direct impact on the microbial quality of our products and processes. This position maintains processes that assure raw materials, manufacturing processes, and environments are microbiologically safe for producing new and existing products.  The job interprets sensitive and technical information related to microbiological quality, and it provides timely recommendations  regarding cost effective resolutions and their potential impact on product quality and safety.
 
Key Responsibilities:

  • Use expert knowledge base and skills to navigate through complex testing strategies.  Analyze, evaluate and communicate results while interfacing with internal and external contacts (e.g., raw ingredient suppliers, contract labs, etc.)
  • Maintain food safety monitoring programs and systems (e.g., HACCP-prerequisite programs -- e.g., in process, and environmental monitoring)
  • Provide input for microbiology testing programs such that timely, consistent and accurate results are delivered.  Assure results are properly recorded and communicated with the appropriate degree of confidentiality
  • Investigate critical microbiological situations in order to assess and prioritize issues and to deliver recommendations in a timely manner such that cost effective corrective measures can be implemented resulting in minimal disruption to the business
  • Assist in validating new methods to isolate and identify microorganisms including foodborne pathogens
  • Maintain Global Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) and other microbiological release systems that communicate with other plant sites and critical ingredient suppliers                                                                                                                                                

 

Key Skills Required:

 

 

 

  • Ability to work independently as well as within a team setting
  • A demonstrated ability to evaluate microbiologically sensitive business risks and to define the appropriate cost effective resolutions in a timely manner
  • Demonstrate effective written and oral communication skills; and presentation skills to be required for participation in training programs and presenting results of scientific research
  • Ability to deal with vendors, consultants, regulatory agencies and various technical and/or non-technical disciplines within or outside the company
  • Excellent analytical and troubleshooting skills
  • Familiar with sensitivity of data, security requirements, and computer applications in the laboratory


 

Minimum Qualifications: 1 year of work experience in microbiology within food and/or pharmaceutical industries


Demonstrated knowledge of food microbiology, food safety, manufacturing processes, material specifications, food laws, environmental regulations, HACCP, GMP's and microbiological test procedures.
Demonstrated laboratory skills to perform microbiological analyses and research 
Demonstrated knowledge of Good Laboratory Practices

B.S. degree in microbiology or related field (e.g., Food Science, Medical Technology, Biotechnology, Biology)

 

Successful completion of a drug and background screen

 

Preferred Qualifications:

 

2+ years of work experience in microbiology within food and/or pharmaceutical industries


Advanced degree in microbiology
