Position Summary:
Located on the Central Coastal area of California, the role of this position is to develop, modify and drive implementation of Food Safety systems in support of the commodity and value-added products. This involves ensuring compliance with federal, state, and local regulations, driving development of self-monitoring and audit systems to track food safety compliance, ensuring ongoing compliance with customers’ expectations, and developing staff for food safety ownership.

Primary Responsibilities:

·         Develop, modify and facilitate implementation of prevention-based food safety programs to ensure protection of the consumer, customer and brand.

·         Develop and maintain Food Safety leadership position, including value added programs to drive revenue generation.

·         Facilitate food safety management systems, compliance and certification audits and regulatory requirements for existing and future markets.

·         Guide organization on regulatory issues and requirements for federal, state, and local regulations. Study existing and anticipate new regulations, develop proactive management systems to effectively comply, and enforce adherence to requirements and advise management on needed actions.

·         Collaborate with Business, Operations, Supply Chain and Innovations processes to integrate and align food safety programs to develop appropriate support for company initiatives.

·         Develop and implement programs to train personnel in food safety principles and practices.

·         Responsible for the management and development of direct reports to include effective use of feedback, salary planning, reward and recognition programs, and development of individual development opportunities with integration of the Quality Competency Model.


·         B.S. in Food Science, Microbiology or related field. M.S. / PhD. strongly preferred.

·         10+ years experience in managing food safety programs with 5+ years as a manager.

·         Experience in food manufacturing and/ or distribution as well as regulatory affairs required.

·         Agriculture or specific produce experience is preferred.


·         The successful applicant will possess the following:

·         Knowledge of Food Safety Management Systems, Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points (HACCP), including Pre-Requisite programs, and Good Agricultural Practices.

·         Experience with management of potential food safety incidents, regulatory contacts, and risk assessments.

·         Demonstrated knowledge of utilizing statistical tools for problem solving, data analysis, and decision making

·         Experience implementing and supporting Global Food Safety Initiative (GFSI) standards

·         Demonstrated ability to develop people, teams, and oneself through innovative means.

·         Demonstrated ability to both lead a team and work in a matrix organization

·         Ability to influence at all levels of the organization and across all functions

·         Ability to prioritize duties in a changing environment and still meet business objectives

·         Ability to communicate well in both written and verbal form, in both small team and large public venues

·         Effective presentation, and public speaking skills

·         Strong computer skills and proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Access.

·         Ability to develop and adhere to department budget.
