State health officials say they are investigating how five children who
attend the same Middleton daycare facility each tested positive for E.coli. Southwest District Health
officials confirmed the positive tests Friday. Investigators have yet to
determine a common link to the source of the bacteria. But health officials say
the form of E.coli contracted in the last few days
by the children, all under age three, can cause serious illness. So far, none
of the children have been hospitalized. Spokeswoman Jennifer Tripp
says the agency is working closely with administrators at the daycare, known
as Little Legs, to make sure staff is following strict hygiene standards for
hands washing and sanitizing surfaces. The daycare will not allow
children to return to the facility until it can be proven they are free of
the bacteria. |
