Cases of E. coli trace back to North Bay Harvey's

NORTH BAY, Ont.–The number of confirmed cases in an E. coli outbreak in North Bay, Ont., has risen to 14 from eight just a day earlier.

Medical officer of health Dr. Catherine Whiting says the number of cases under investigation has also risen to 38 from 20 on Tuesday.

All of the cases have been traced to people who ate at a local Harvey's restaurant after Sept. 28.

The restaurant was ordered closed by the local health unit as a precautionary measure.

Whiting says patients range from young children to the elderly, and some are hospitalized while others are recovering at home.

Officials say other potential sources of E. coli contamination such as the municipal drinking water system have been looked at, but have been ruled out.
