The Environmental Health Specialist II performs a variety of professional and technical work in environmental health in the enforcement through inspection, education and investigation of rules and regulations adopted by the Health Department.

 Examples of Duties:

1. Enforces Federal, State and local regulations and ordinances related to assigned areas; utilizes independent judgment and/or receives advice from superiors in selecting appropriate methods and procedures to use in resolving specific problems.
2. Performs inspections of waste disposal sites, air pollution sources, establishments, individual water and sewage, swimming pools, ambulances, etc.; issues permits and licenses where appropriate; works with operators and the public in resolving problems of compliance.
3. Investigates a variety of complaints, such as sewage and solid waste disposal, water pollution, public nuisances, insect and rodent control, etc.; may investigate problems found through regular sampling as assigned by superiors, or through own initiative.
4. Assists in the performance of epidemiological investigations as necessary.
5. Reviews, revises and updates assigned file records to insure accuracy and completeness; prepares a variety of reports, correspondence and articles for official use and public information.
6. Attends a variety of meetings, conferences and training sessions; may make presentations to various groups as assigned.
7. Trains less experienced personnel as assigned.
8. Responds to incidents that may result in exposure to disease, hazardous materials or toxic substances.
9. Performs related work as required.

 Typical Qualifications:

Education: Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor of Science degree in environmental health, public health, or related field, or, Additional related education may apply toward required experience.
Experience: A minimum of two years of professional experience performing technical tasks in the investigation of environmental health conditions.

 Supplemental Information:

NOTE: New employees typically start at or near entry level.

Knowledge of educational and community outreach strategies.
Ability to understand, interpret, and apply statutes and regulations pertaining to food safety and vector control.
Ability to effectively present educational classes.
Ability to use standard computer software, including Microsoft Office programs; GIS experience is preferred.
Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with coworkers, clients, outside agencies, and the public.
Ability to perform as a team player.
Special Requirements:
Must have access to reliable transportation, readily available for business use.
