Job Description

Kellogg Company has a new opportunity available for a Food Safety Scientist in Battle Creek, MI. The Food Safety Scientist develops policies and standards to ensure Kellogg products meet food safety expectations throughout the entire product life cycle. This role provides guidance, advice and interpretation to Research, Quality, Manufacturing, Engineering and Procurement on food safety related programs and issues and utilizes interactions with external resources and partners to identify and monitor emerging issues and technologies that have an impact on Kellogg. The primary focus for this role is to support development and implementation of food safety initiatives affecting Kellogg Company and Contract Manufacturing facilities.

Additional responsibilities include: 1. Manages the design, execution, and follow-up of quality and food safety programs including allergens, microbiological issues, foreign material and any other food safety issues that could pose a risk to human health. 2. Conducts hazard assessments and directs food safety risk mitigation steps in support of projects or innovation at the manufacturing facilities. Will need to apply scientific judgment and experience to identify and prevent food safety issues. 3. Partners with Supply Chain and Engineering to hygienically design equipment and food manufacturing facilities that enables sanitation and the production of high quality food products. 4. Provides information, risk assessment, and recommendations for courses of action to Crisis Management Team on issues involving food safety. Uses judgment and discretion in dealing with sensitive information to minimize Company exposure to and liability for food safety related incidences. 5. Provides communication and recommendation to Quality, Communications, Research, Consumer Affairs, Marketing, Plants, and Legal on the food safety implications of new product formulations or ingredient changes. Directs review of new product formulas for allergy issues, microbiological safety, Kellogg practices and regulatory compliance.

Job responsibilities require travel (15-25%)

Minimum: Position requires a B.S. in Microbiology / Food Toxicology / Chemistry or related area and 8-10 years equivalent experience, an M.S. in Microbiology / Food Toxicology / Chemistry or related area and 6-8 years or a Ph.D. in Microbiology / Food Toxicology / Chemistry or related area and at least 3-5 years industrial experience

The individual should have knowledge and ability to integrate food law, food technology, food chemistry, microbiology, cereal science and agricultural practice. They should possess leadership and communication skills, and diplomacy that will promote good relations with management and other technical and scientific disciplines in the effective execution of projects to accomplish corporate objectives.
