Eighty three people from Mthome village have been admitted to hospital for diarrhoea and vomiting, an Eastern Cape health department spokesperson said on Tuesday.

Sizwe Kupelo said 54 people were admitted to St Banarbos hospital on Sunday and an additional 29 were admitted on Tuesday.

Kupelo said doctors confirmed that the people were suffering from food poisoning.

Kupelo said the department has sent a team of health workers to area to access the outbreak.

"We have dispatched a team of health environmental officers, health promoters and a communicable disease manager to the village to deal with the outbreak," he said.

Kupelo said the health workers had discovered that the sick had attended a traditional ceremony in the village on Saturday and had eaten meat and porridge.

He said the sick were still under observation at the hospital. - Sapa
