Eighty three people from
Mthome village have been admitted to hospital for
diarrhoea and vomiting, an Eastern Cape health department
spokesperson said on Tuesday.
Sizwe Kupelo said 54
people were admitted to St Banarbos hospital on
Sunday and an additional 29 were admitted on Tuesday.
Kupelo said doctors confirmed that the people
were suffering from food poisoning.
Kupelo said the department has sent a team of
health workers to area to access the outbreak.
"We have dispatched a team of health environmental officers, health
promoters and a communicable disease manager to the village to deal with
the outbreak," he said.
Kupelo said the health workers had discovered
that the sick had attended a traditional ceremony in the village on
Saturday and had eaten meat and porridge.
He
said the sick were still under observation at the hospital. - Sapa
