Job Description

The newly established Center for Agricultural and Environmental Biotechnology is looking for candidates to fill the position of post doctoral associate in the field of food safety & security. The focus and goal of the Center is to conduct advanced agricultural and biotechnology research that enhances understanding of critical plant-microbe interactions, physiological processes, and metabolomic modeling that enables a wide range of commercial applications related to agricultural sustainability, global climate change, food security & safety, renewable energy, ethnobotany, green biotechnology, and bioremediation integrated with site management.

The successful candidate will work under the supervision of the program director for food safety & security as part of a multidisciplinary team, and will be part of an original food safety program that covers various aspects of risks associated with biotic and abiotic food contaminants (such as the presence/transfer of heavy metals and agrochemicals in the food chain), as well as original strategies to study microbial community dynamics as part of strategies to control opportunistic food-borne pathogens. One of the focus areas of research will be using microbes to lower arsenic uptake into rice. This work will be closely tied into other CAEB programs, such as food waste conversion via anaerobic digestion. The responsibilities will include the daily planning, execution and quality control of the research, writing research papers, contributing to the preparation of grants and proposals, and participating in discussions with external commercial and government clients.

Ph.D. in a field related to food safety (environmental microbiology,
plant sciences, molecular biology)

An excellent track record in performing original research in the field of environmental
microbiology as reflected in the candidate's publication list

1-2 years experience researching the impact of metal-microbe interactions

1-2 years experience utilizing tools such as GC-MS, SPME, TOC, HPLC, IC and Atomic absorption spectrometry (AAS) to support research activity

Previous post doc research experience a plus.

Background in microbial ecology, molecular microbiology including in situ identification and quantification of microorganisms.
