TITLE: Food Safety Technical Specialist

LOCATION: Lyons, KS

DIVISION: North American Salt Company

REPORTS TO: QC Manager

Summary: This position will be primarily responsible for leading the food safety effort at the Lyons plant. This individual will oversee the plant food safety committee, lead and conduct meetings for food safety, conduct internal site and product traceability audits, oversee pest control activities, conduct annual plant food safety training; writing, implementing and enforcing policies; assisting with corporate food safety issues; assisting with quality control and quality system of the manufacturing process at the Lyons facility by performing analytical testing on process and finished product samples; troubleshooting process related issues to assure the overall quality of the end product. This individual will also lend support to sales and marketing by performing competitive product analysis, sending out product samples, analyzing complaint samples and work with production personnel to investigate source of complaint.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:

  • Lead plant Food Safety effort (training, procedures, audits)
  • Support quality system improvement
  • Provide analytical support for the plant and technical laboratory as needed
  • Sales and Customer Service support
  • Environmental sample collection and analyses
  • Maintain Analytical Equipment as needed

Education and/or Experience:

BA/BS Chemistry, Biology, or related science degree preferred with a minimum of 3-5 years laboratory and/or food safety experience; or an equivalent combination in education, work experience and/or training. Knowledge of HACCP, analytical instrumentation, general analytical techniques (pH, gravimetric, titrations, etc.), food safety and MS Office.

While performing the duties, the employee is regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts and fumes or airborne particles. The employee is frequently exposed to outside weather conditions and extreme heat. The employee is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions; high, precarious places, or small quantities of cleaning/lubricating chemicals. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to loud.
