2 dead, 28 sickened after food poisoning in China

BEIJING: Two students died from food poisoning and 28 others were hospitalized in northwest China after eating dinner at their school, state media reported Tuesday.

The official Xinhua News Agency said the two students from Qingcheng Middle School in northern Gansu province suffered from vomiting and stomachaches after eating dinner at the school on Monday.

The two were rushed to the hospital but died shortly afterward, Xinhua said, citing local government officials from Qingcheng county.

No names, ages or gender of the victims were immediately available, the report said.

The local government sent more than 300 students from the school to the hospital for medical examinations Monday evening, and 38 were diagnosed with food poisoning. Ten were discharged and 28 were admitted for observation.

An investigation is under way, Xinhua said.
