Bacteria is the culprit of last month's illness that sickened close to 200 people at a fundraiser dinner catered by Carnegie Cafe

The Onondaga County Health Department has confirmed the cause of last month's gastrointestinal outbreak that sickened close to 200 people.

Environmental health director Gary Sauda says two bacteria caused food poisoning during a fundraising dinner catered by Carnegie Cafe.

"We felt from the start that this was probably related to procedures relative to preparations and these types of bacteria are associated with heating and cooling procedures so it all ties in," said Sauda.

Carnegie Cafe has been cooperating with the investigation. It recently released a letter describing new measures it's taking to better prepare and transport food.
